Under Ubuntu 6.06 just add 'usb 0x4b8 0x818' (no quotes) right after the similar comented out line in /etc/sane.d/epson.conf - See PITA thread for more detail. Then 'sudo gedit /etc/udev/rules.d/45-libsane.rules': add your scanner in GROUP='scanner'; make sure your user-ID is in the group 'scanner'. Ignore the error-messages when closing the xsane.
